During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
