The Video Platform Offers The Community Power to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to lessen the volume of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it currently hosts more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a global release. This shift coincides with a rise in content created by AI, driven by emerging content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that approximately one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from digital art to educational videos, and we want to give people the ability to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network identified as artificially created. Overall, in excess of 100 million videos are added to the platform each day, making AI content a relatively small part of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the app and picking AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the tool encompass news, fashion, cosmetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies require creators to tag “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of public figures or emergencies. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.

In addition, the service will now apply an artificially created watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an collaborative effort for recognizing AI-generated material. This step is intended to deter users from trying to bypass the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also launching a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and groups to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This initiative will assist non-profit groups focused on teaching coding and technology.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, following debate over proposals to lay off hundreds of safety staff in Britain. TikTok is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection team in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content before it has to be seen by humans. TikTok reported a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
