Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
