A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
